The 2022 edition of the European Week of Waste Reduction (November 19-27) puts the focus on textile. Fashion is one of the ways that we use to express ourselves. Behind red carpets, fashion shows and sales, there is a massive industry employing over 1.5 million people just in Europe. But the other side of the coin tells a different story, less shining and much more alarming. The textile and clothing industry is one of the most polluting sectors with strong impact on land use, water pollution and even greenhouse emissions.
Waste is out of fashion!
We invite all students to take part in the #EUYC challenges:
Challenge #1 – Rethink

Challenge #1 – Rethink
As part of the European Week for Waste Reduction, we challenge you: Instead of throwing things away when you don't need them anymore, maybe you have an idea how you can repurpose or use things differently? There are no limits to your imagination! Post a photo of what you have reused or repurposed in the comments. We are looking forward to your ideas. And tag your friends to challenge them too.
Alternatively, you can also write a comment on the topic!
Challenge #2 – Upcycle
As part of the European Week for Waste Reduction, we challenge you: Instead of throwing things in the trash directly when you don’t need them anymore: maybe you have an idea how to upcycle them? Sew a bag out of your old jeans, crochet with cut-up plastic sheets or make an art installation out of unusable CDs. There are no limits to your imagination! Share a photo in the comments which materials you have successfully upcycled. Don’t forget to tag your friends in the comments to challenge them too. We are looking forward to your ideas.
Alternatively, you can also write a comment on the topic!
Challenge #3 – Reuse
As part of the European Week for Waste Reduction, we challenge you: Do you feel like shopping for the latest trends and always like you have nothing to wear? Get together with your friends and their discarded clothes and organize a clothes swap. This way you can try on different styles without spending all your money and change your consumer habits for the climate. Post a photo in your new second-hand fashion look in the comments and tag a friend you would like to invite to the cinema.
Alternatively, you can also write a comment on the topic!
