Sarajevo Film Festival
With an average of around 100,000 visitors each year, the Sarajevo Film Festival has become one of the continent’s leading film festivals. It was founded by Mirsad "Miro" Purivatra in 1995, while the Balkan war was still raging in and around the besieged city. Today, the festival is one of the most significant centres of the entire Eastern European film production industry. Although the festival features productions from all over the world by now, the focus is still on regional productions. Also, the festival has made great efforts in promoting and advancing Bosnian film talent through its workshops and master classes. The high level of quality of the featured films, as well as the charm of this historical city guarantee that a great number of high-class international guests (including superstars such as Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Bono and Gérard Depardieu) visit Sarajevo in the month of August to introduce and present their newest projects.

Filmfestival goEast
Wiesbaden’s goEast film festival was founded by Claudia Dillmann in 2001. With this, the director of the German Film Institute reinstated an old and almost forgotten tradition, being that Eastern European film weeks served to throw a glance over the wall every now and then until the late eighties. As the festival’s very first catalogue read: “The time has come to open up, for the thoughts, images, myths and stories of our eastern neighbours. For their culture. For their films.” Meinwhile, goEast has become a widely popular institution. More than 200 international guests gather in the Hessian capital each year and enjoy a week of cinematographic exchange between Eastern and Western Europe in one of Germany’s most beautiful cinemas: the Caligari FilmBühne. The competition for one of the main awards, sponsored by the state and the city, involves feature films as well as documentaries.
