The Devil from Seventh Grade

Synopsis

His keen intelligence and talent for solving even the most difficult riddles earned 17-year-old Adam the nickname “Devil”. One of his teachers, who is very enthusiastic about Adam’s investigative skills, invites him to his brother’s ancient castle for the summer holidays. Here many curious things occur without explanation, such as doors vanishing into thin air in a second. There the teenager meets Wanda, the teacher’s beautiful niece, and immediately falls in love with her. Encouraged by the girl, he begins the exciting investigation to solve the castle’s mystery. But he is not the only one interested in the hidden secrets of these ancient walls. When a dangerous gang of criminals shows up at the castle, Adam has to find a way to outwit them. In 1960, the Polish director Maria Kaniewska created with The Devil from Seventh Grade a promising adaption of the juvenile book of the same title by Kornel Makuszyński. Not only is it a classic in Poland, but has also been published around the globe. The film version was a great success as well. It shows the former 19-year-old Pola Raksa in her first role, before becoming one of the most popular Polish film stars of the 1960s.
