Vesna has built a new identity. Under a new name and new place of residence, she now lives a calm and peaceful life as a nurse in Zagreb. Her son Vladimir is expecting his second child and her daughter Jadranka is about to get married. Everything seems to be in order, until the past seems to catch up with Vesna. Her husband Žarko, said to be a war criminal who bore arms for “the other side”, calls her out of nowhere one day. After twenty years without contact, he wants to see his family again. Put-off and hostile at first, Vesna doesn’t know how to react, but stays in contact with him by phone. The bygone years, filled with loneliness, left their marks on her. Life, as Vesna knows it, threatens to break apart. Will she be able to forgive Žarko? As more and more old wounds tear open, Vesna is overwhelmed by feelings of shame, and grief at the ruthlessness, but also by love. Zrinko Ogresta’s work asks whether one is able to forgive without hurting innocent loved ones. With phenomenally positioned, investigative camera angles and innovative narration, the Director has transformed the drama of a disrupted family into a psychologically complex parable on the post-war period, including an unpredictable twist.
