Synopsis

Igor and Irena, a well-off couple, embark on a long sailing trip, far from home. They leave behind their nearly grown-up children, 15-year-old Erik and his sister Anna who already goes to university. But they do take the dog with them. Soon after departing, the children’s newfound freedom starts to have its drawbacks. The early light-heartedness of both adolescents soon turns into a sloppiness which has certain consequences. The situation becomes dangerously serious when their parents’ ship sinks offshore during a storm. The dog, which is stranded on a deserted island, seems to be the last hope for the family that threatens to break apart. Impressive images and an accomplished story make up the greatest strengths of this production which becomes an adventure film of a different kind. Long camera angles reveal almost surreal scenes and convey a noticeable distancing to the audience. Eliška Křenková, in the role of the girl Krýstina, gives a truly outstanding performance, as does Karel Roden, the on-screen father. Not to mention Otto, the family dog, who contributes to the overall success of Family Film. The label “especially worthwhile” is completely justified.
