Eleven-year-old Łukasz is beaming with joy because he can go on holiday together with his mother. On the way, however, a car suddenly cuts into their path and in an attempt to swerve away, their car rolls over countless times. They both end up in hospital. Łukasz walks away with minor fractures but his mother is in a coma. After his recovery, the boy has to go and live in his aunt Agata’s Bed and Breakfast, staying in his mother’s old bedroom. It does not take long before Łukasz discovers a secret within the room: If he knocks on a blue door with the right rhythm, a fascinating parallel world will open up behind it. Mariusz Palej allows the audience, especially the children amongst them, to submerge completely in the magnificent, colourful and exciting fantasies of his protagonist. The fact that he also deals with the sensitive topics of friendship and parental love, as well as loneliness and loss, makes the film extremely valuable as an educational tool. The deeply-elaborated psychological adventure tale is based on the children’s book of the same name by best-selling Polish author Marcin Szczygielski. The film was selected as the best debut feature at the 2016 film festival in Poznań, and received awards at other festivals too.
