The film centres on three different father-daughter relations dealt with against the background of a soap opera production. The pregnant producer Nataša is trying to contact her estranged father once again. Living in an unhappy relationship, her psyche seems to be additionally stressed. Ives, director of the TV show, has to look after her beloved dad who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and sometimes doesn’t even recognise his own daughter. And finally, there is ten-year-old Dora, whose mother works as a make-up artist for the TV broadcast. Neglected and on her own, the tomboy and football enthusiast displays an almost startling precocity – until her long gone dead beat dad suddenly shows up again. All three women’s personal luck and happiness seem to be prevented by daily routine and everyday life. The stories are intertwined in a delicate and skilful manner. Dreamlike sequences visualise the protagonists’ feelings, but they do not belittle the cruelty of many a scene. Despite the exceptional complexity, the story is structured so well that 155 minutes seem to fly by in a flash. Croatian film critics comprehensively praise You Carry Me as a milestone in the Croatian history of films because of its charming combination of profound screenplay, inventive direction and marvellous camera work.
