It is often said that true love needs no words. Maybe this is why Director Urszula Antoniak hardly makes use of dialogue in Nude Area. In contrast, the imagery is full of soul. 15 episodes, not in chronological order, tell a highly emotional love story that takes place in Amsterdam: the story of posh Dutchwoman Naomi and poor Arabian migrant Fama. The feature begins with a scene in which the short, but all the more intense, relationship has already faded. Little by little, we learn what happened between the first time the protagonists meet and the time their love has died. Central point: during secret meetings in a female only sauna, the women's nudity makes cultural, religious and social differences disappear. Nude Area tells an impressive story of tenderness and cruelty, ecstasy and disappointment, strength and fragility, and waiting and fulfilment. The Polish-Dutch co-production portrays the complexity of female desire in a very intelligent way, fortunately without using any stereotypes about the topic. “The most tantric, televisual experience imaginable” (Cineuropa).
