Synopsis

The box office hit tells the story of eleven passionate football players and their way from the streets of the Belgrade suburbs to participation in the FIFA World Cup 1930 in Uruguay for Yugoslavia. The plot centres on the relationship between two top players: naturally gifted Tirke from a poor background, and Moša, superstar and playboy, who comes from a wealthy family. The men become friends when they play as strikers for the Belgrade Sports Club BSC (nowadays Partizan Belgrade). They also pull together in the newly founded national team – at first. When they get in each other's way because of two beautiful women, their unity, of course, soon crumbles to pieces. Rosa, all small-town sensual innocence, adores Tirke, but her uncle, who is nuts about football, does everything to set her up with Moša; in the meantime, Valeria, a bohemian free spirit, seduces Moša and enjoys stirring him up against Tirke. Based on Vladimir Stanković's eponymous best-seller, Montevideo, a football fairy-tale about team spirit, friendship, endurance and love, especially love for the game, was a great success with the Serbian audience – both female and male. At the LET'S CEE Film Festival, the feature has its Austrian premiere.
