Synopsis

Liza is naive, innocent and considerate. For twelve years, the nurse has faithfully been taking care of Marta, widow of the former Japanese ambassador in Budapest. Her only friend is Tomy Tani, the ghost of a Japanese pop singer. But since Liza is the only one who can see him, she feels very lonely. So on her thirtieth birthday, she sets out to find love with a capital L. Tomy Tani, however, who appears to be more real than initially thought, is not happy about that at all. He kills first Marta, and then all men Liza is dating. With the police investigating her, Liza begins to fear that she might be a fox-fairy, a demon from Japanese mythology that brings death to all men who fall in love with her. Liza, the Fox-Fairy is both a flamboyant and imaginative fairy-tale for adults that takes place in a capitalist and therefore fictional Budapest in the 1970s. With his fascinating feature film debut, Károly Ujj Mészáros manages to combine Hungarian and Japanese culture without forgetting romance and suspense, all the while entertaining the audience with a good portion of black humour. The opulent set design that is reminiscent of Amélie is outstanding as well.
