Predictions of Fire shows the work of the art collective Neue Slowenische Kunst (New Slovenian Art)and, in doing so, is as contradictory and ambiguous as NSK itself. Director Michael Benson accompanied art groups like the iconic industrial band Laibach or the painting collective Irwin and complemented his observations with historical recordings, interviews, recordings from concerts, quotes and still lifes staged in a slightly trashy way. He arranged these as a collage, in which the characteristics of a documentary and mere staging become indistinct. These grey areas are what Predictions of Fire has in common with the art of NSK, which regularly inflames its audience with martial aesthetics and provocative performances. The movie gives the audience the chance to witness this fascinating world up close and impresses with its rich imagery. Besides the story of the collective, the political development of the Balkan States plays a central role in the movie as well. In 1996, the jury of the Vancouver International Film Festival elected this amazing production the best documentary and reasoned its decision: “Predictions of Fire is intellectual dynamite. It explodes the icons and myths of communism and capitalism.” Variety sees Predictions of Fire as a “timely, sharply focused docu”.
