They say that Jazz often is love at first note – a love that will equally often last until death. While many remain loyal listeners, some people feel the need to grab an instrument and start playing after their first encounter with the music. After long years of practice, a few of them become very skilled. In order to achieve that, one cannot deny the importance of the most vital part of this particular discipline: improvisation. The music documentary Time to improvise by Tina Lešničar and Janez Stucin portrays eight Slovenian musicians, all between 21 and 35 years old, touring New York, Amsterdam and Vienna. The jazz musicians stand out not only on account of their talent and their ambition, but also for their endless pursuit of perfection and their imagination. Their main goal is to gain experience by touring abroad, and they even get to play with renowned American performers such as bass players Reggie Workman and Joe Sanders, drummers Doug Hammond, Nasheet Waits and Damion Reid and pianists Jason Moran and Vijay Iyer. All these young musicians are obviously in search of their place in their respective genres and, on their journey to reach this goal, have already become valuable assets to the scene, both at home and abroad. The documentary provides a captivating look into a fascinating world outside the mainstream. After the screening and a Q&A, two of the protagonists, accompanied by two more great musicians *), will play a one-hour concert based on own songs and improvisations, partly from their last records and partly from Time to Improvise.
