Synopsis

Weronika lives in Poland and is an exceptionally gifted singer. She suffers from a serious heart condition. Véronique, who lives in France and looks almost exactly the same as Weronika, is also in love with music. And she suffers from a weak heart, too. Moreover, both were born on the same day and both women are left-handed. And these are just a few of their many similarities. When Weronika dies at her first big concert, Véronique feels that something awful must have happened. The feeling of being connected to somebody else by a mystical, invisible bond accompanies her through her whole life. And then, there is this mysterious puppeteer she feels attracted to and who helps her realise one day that she must have even met Weronika (or herself) once before in a brief moment of her life. The symbolic, poetically filmed fairy tale (starring the great Irene Jacob in a double role) is a love song to coincidence and destiny, to the supernatural and sensitivity, to the role of feelings and the eerie power of intuitiveness. The brilliant Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski admirably accomplished to create such an exceptionally significant masterpiece in the history of film, using perceptively composed pictures and charmingly ethereal music amongst other things.
