Photographer, concept and performance artist, as well as the private and creative partner of famous performance artist Marina Abramović for many years, transvestite and activist - all this was and is German performance artist Frank Uwe Laysiepen, also known as Ulay. The seventy-year-old, who now lives in Ljubljana has been counted among one of the greats of the international arts scene and used to work as a professor at the national high college for design, the HfG Karlsruhe. The construction of identity and body has been central to Ulay’s work for a long time. The idea of uniting performance and photography, attempting to measure the boundaries of the own body and gender typecasting, and water as a general topic also influenced his art over a long period. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2011, which led to a planned portrayal by director Damjan Kozole turning into a documentary about how the disease transformed his body.
