Aida Begić was born in Sarajevo in 1976. The filmmaker thus comes from an area that was devastated by a brutal war during her youth and has been torn ever since. After studying film direction at the Sarajevo Academy of Performing Arts, Aida Begić dedicated her work to revisiting this topic. Her tripartite identity - Bosnian, female, muslim - has a strong influence on her work, which is especially dedicated to women in post-war Bosnia, such as Snow (Snijeg, 2008) or Children of Sarajevo (Djeca, 2012). Begić’s politically relevant work was recognised on many international festivals: Snow, for instance, won the main award of the Semaine de la Critique at the Cannes Film Festival. Her films were also featured in the main competitions of the Sarajevo Film Festival, as well as in Thessaloniki and Gijón. Begić recently contributed to the omnibus project Bridges of Sarajevo, which premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and will also be shown during the LET’S CEE Film Festival.
