Synopsis

In 1942, the Western border of the USSR has been occupied by German Armed Forces and only few partisans still make a stand. The good-natured worker Sushenya finds himself at the wrong place at the wrong time. After derailing a train, three of his colleagues are hanged for sabotage. Unexpectedly, only Sushenya is released and returns to his family severely scarred by these events. Back home, his former comrades-in-arms accuse and suspect him of being a collaborator. One night, two partisans - one of them his old friend and neighbour Burov – come to his door and demand revenge. Sushenya surrenders unresistingly and faces his penalty, although he does not deserve it. Taken into the woods, where he is supposed to be executed, Sushenya is saved by two strangers. Suddenly the tide is turning and Sushenya is in control of life and death. With In the Fog, Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa created an emotional drama about fault and morality at times of war. In a minimalist style with calm images and only little cutting, the director traces the protagonists’ long way of suffering, which reflects the logic of war. In the end, what has already been clear becomes evident: everyone is responsible for their own actions.
