Synopsis

After a heated argument with his girlfriend, Costi decides to spend a few days with his family in a mountain hut. Although his parents have been separated for a long time, Costi is convinced that the idea to persuade his father Sandu to join them is a good one, even though he left the family because of his unrest and interest in other women. Father and son make their way in the battered down, yet lovely family car nicknamed “Mariţa” from Transylvania to Moldova, where Costi’s mother and brothers await his arrival. The car brings up old memories and a new intimacy arises between the two travellers. When Costi and his surprise guest finally arrive, Sandu manages to entertain the family for one evening with his adorably funny and colourful anecdotes. But is humour enough to heal the deep wounds of the past? Will Costi find a way to develop a better understanding for his parents and also for himself? Mariţa, Christi Iftime’s first feature film, is a warm-hearted comedy about the true value of family. The director points out that in his wintry road movie “home” does not symbolise a physical location or a group of people, but rather a lost state that has to be rediscovered.
